Stand-up paddleboarding in the Ría de Arousa by boat: paddle where no one else can
SUP in the Ría de Arousa is twice as good when a boat drops you in crystal-clear, crowd-free water: here's where to paddle, when to come and how we run a paddleboard day out of Vilanova de Arousa.
If you've ever tried stand-up paddleboarding, chances are it was off a beach: you rent the board, paddle a hundred metres between swimmers, the current pushes you back to where you started, and that's that. We rent out our skippered boat from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, and we'd like to suggest a different way of doing it: we load the boards on deck, cruise to the prettiest, calmest corner of the ría that the day's conditions allow, and you paddle there — in transparent water, with nobody around, over scenery you'll never see from any beach with a car park.
That's the difference between "trying SUP" and one of the best days of your holiday in Galicia.
Why the Ría de Arousa is an exceptional place to paddle
Paddleboarding asks for three things: flat water, little wind and something beautiful to look at while you paddle. The Ría de Arousa delivers all three.
- Sheltered water. This is the largest of the Rías Baixas, protected from the open Atlantic by the O Grove peninsula and the island of Sálvora. Inside, on a normal day, the surface turns to glass — especially early in the morning, before the north-westerly thermal breeze picks up.
- Turquoise corners. The sandbank of Guidoiro Areoso, the shallows south of Illa de Arousa and the coves of Carreirón sit over white-sand bottoms that turn the water a colour nobody associates with Galicia. Paddling over them with the sun high, you can watch your own shadow glide across the seabed.
- Scenery that changes every ten minutes. Mussel rafts (bateas), traditional dorna boats at anchor, herons fishing along the shore, the Punta Cabalo lighthouse on its rocky point… The ría is a living stage. Paddling here never gets dull.
The problem with beach-launched SUP (and how the boat solves it)
The best paddling spots in the entire ría have one thing in common: you can't walk to them. Areoso is an islet; the sandbanks south of Illa de Arousa mean a long walk from the car park; and the mussel-raft fields — fascinating to explore by board — are out in open water.
With the boat, the logistics vanish:
- We board at the port of Vilanova de Arousa at the agreed time.
- The skipper — who has been sailing and paddling this ría since he was a kid — picks the spot with the best conditions that day: leeward, clean water, no boat traffic.
- We anchor, drop the boards in and you paddle as long as you like, with the boat as your base: water, shade, a cool box and a dry place for your phone.
- Wind shifts? We weigh anchor and fifteen minutes later you're paddling in another sheltered cove.
That flexibility simply doesn't exist from shore. And with children or first-timers, having the boat twenty metres away brings a peace of mind you notice the first time someone falls in laughing.

Our three favourite places to paddle
1. The Guidoiro Areoso sandbank
The classic. A white-sand islet off Illa de Arousa, with turquoise water and shallow bottoms made for SUP. Paddling around Areoso at high tide, gliding over sandy meadows a metre deep, is the closest thing to the Caribbean you'll do in Galicia. Note: landing on the islet is restricted to protect it — one more reason to enjoy it from the water, which is where it looks best anyway.
2. The south coast of Illa de Arousa and Carreirón
Small coves, rocky points, crystal-clear water and the Carreirón natural park as a backdrop. The game here is coasting along: every point you round opens up a new cove. In a flat calm, it's the most beautiful board ride in the ría.
3. Among the mussel rafts
Paddling between the wooden platforms where Galicia's mussels are grown is an experience that exists only here. The rafts work like reefs: shoals of fish gather beneath them, and cormorants and herons are regular company on the surface. We always do this with the boat close by and well clear of the areas where the mussel farmers are working — the ría is their office, and we respect it.
When to come: the window is longer than you'd think
- May to October is the natural season: water between 16 and 20 °C, long days, and the thermal breeze as the only thing to keep an eye on.
- September and October are our open secret: the water holds its summer warmth, the crowds are gone and calm sunrises come one after another. If you like wine, it also coincides with the Albariño harvest in Cambados, right across the water.
- The hour matters more than the month. The perfect SUP plan is a morning one: flat sea until midday, lunch on board or in a harbour on Illa de Arousa, then an afternoon of swimming and lazing at anchor once the breeze arrives.
We check the wind and tide forecast the evening before and send you an adjusted plan. If the day looks hopeless — rare, but it happens — we'll tell you honestly and find another date.

Do I need experience? A licence?
Neither.
- Experience: flat-water SUP takes ten minutes to learn. You start paddling on your knees, and once the board stops feeling like a wild animal, you stand up. In the spots we choose there are no waves or currents to make it hard.
- Licence: our skipper handles the boat, so you don't need any nautical qualification. You come, paddle and enjoy; navigation, anchoring and safety are our job. There are life jackets on board for everyone, children's sizes included.
If you come as a group and someone doesn't fancy paddling, no problem: the boat takes up to 6 guests plus the skipper, and while some paddle, others swim, sunbathe or simply watch — which in this landscape is a plan in itself.
How we run a paddleboard trip
- Half day (4 hours) — €300. The ideal format if SUP is the main event: a morning's paddling in one or two spots, a swim and back. The price is per boat, not per person: split between 6, that's €50 a head.
- Full day — €500. SUP in the morning calm, lunch on board or on Illa de Arousa, then an afternoon of coves, snorkelling and swinging at anchor. The complete day.
- Fuel is charged separately, depending on the route we take. We spell it out before you book — no surprises.
If you have your own boards, we're happy to load them. If not, let us know when booking and we'll have everything arranged so all you need to bring is swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.

Message us on WhatsApp at +34 685 74 24 20 with the date you have in mind and how many you are. We'll reply with the forecast, the plan we'd suggest and real availability. We sail from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, under an hour from Santiago, Pontevedra and Vigo.
Gliding upright across a sheet of turquoise water, mussel rafts on one side and Areoso ahead, is one of those things you don't forget. And it starts with a message.
