Renting a boat with no licence in Galicia: how skippered charters work

It is, by far, the question we get most often on WhatsApp: "Do I need a licence to rent the boat?" And the short answer is no. We rent out our boat here, from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, always with a skipper included, so you can spend a whole day cruising the Ría de Arousa even if you've never set foot on a boat in your life. No nautical qualifications, no previous experience, no paperwork: you step aboard and we take care of the rest.

In this guide we'll explain honestly how licence-free boat rental works in Galicia, how it differs from bareboat hire, what the rules say, and why even qualified boaters often prefer to go out with a local skipper.

Can you rent a boat in Spain without a licence?

Spanish regulations are clear: to helm a leisure boat you need a nautical qualification (Licencia de Navegación, PNB, PER…) as soon as the boat exceeds certain length and power limits. Without a qualification you can only handle very small craft — up to 5 metres in length with limited engine power — and always under restrictions: daytime navigation, within 2 nautical miles of a port or refuge.

Our boat is 8.5 metres long with a 2.65-metre beam and certified for 10 people, so it sits well beyond what you can helm without a licence. But here's the key point: when you rent with a skipper, the skipper provides the qualification. You're there to enjoy yourself, and legally you're a passenger, not the person in command. That's how the vast majority of our guests go out: couples, families, groups of friends, companies… Most have no qualification at all, and it makes no difference whatsoever.

What "with a skipper" means in practice

On paper it sounds like a formality, but in practice it transforms the whole day. Going out with a skipper means:

• Zero responsibility for you. The boat, the navigation, the anchoring, the manoeuvres and the weather are our problem. You sign no helming liability and no handling deposit.
• A local guide on board. We don't just drive the boat: we know this ría inside out. We know what time the sandbank at Areoso looks its best, which cove on the Illa de Arousa will be empty on an August Saturday, and where to get the best view of the Punta Cabalo lighthouse without getting near the rocks.
• Total flexibility. Group wants a swim and a nap? We anchor in a cove. Curious about the mussel rafts (bateas)? We get close and explain how they're farmed. Kids on board? We adjust pace and route. You set the plan; we make it happen.
• Real safety. The Ría de Arousa is a gentle sea, but it has its quirks: shallows, shellfish farms, harvesting zones, mussel-boat traffic. A local skipper reads all of that without looking at a chart.

"I have a licence — is a skippered charter still worth it?"

We get asked this a lot, and our honest answer is: almost always yes, at least the first time you sail the Ría de Arousa. These are the reasons our qualified guests themselves give us when they come back:

1. You can't learn this ría in a day. With over 2,300 mussel rafts, sandbanks that appear and vanish with the tide (Areoso itself is the perfect example) and aquaculture zones marked in their own particular way, navigating here for the first time on a rental boat is more stress than pleasure.
2. A genuinely free day off. Whoever helms doesn't swim relaxed, doesn't eat relaxed and doesn't drink Albariño. With a skipper, everyone on board is a passenger and everyone enjoys the day equally.
3. You make far better use of your time. We go straight to the good spots at the right time of day. Without a skipper, half the outing is spent second-guessing.

That said: if you're qualified and experienced and you'd love to take the helm, just tell the skipper during the trip — within reason, the wheel gets shared, and the photos are great.

How much does a skippered boat rental cost in the Ría de Arousa?

Our rates are the same whether you hold a licence or not, because the skipper is always included:

• Half day (4 hours): €300
• Full day: €500
• Fuel not included, charged on the actual consumption of your route.

The price is per boat, not per person, for groups of up to 6 people plus the skipper. Do the maths: a full day split between 6 friends works out at about €83 each plus a share of fuel — less than a seafood platter, and you get the whole ría in return.

We depart from the port of Vilanova de Arousa, with easy parking and comfortable boarding. Coming from Sanxenxo, O Grove or Vilagarcía, you're less than half an hour away by car.

What a typical no-licence day looks like (because you don't need one)

To give you a realistic picture, this is the structure of a full-day outing that works beautifully for groups who have never sailed:

1. Boarding in Vilanova and a short briefing: lifejackets, basic rules and the day's plan.
2. The mussel raft route: we cruise among the rafts while we explain the farming that makes this ría unique in the world.
3. Areoso: anchoring by the islet's white sandbank, a swim in turquoise water and photos that look like the Caribbean.
4. Coves of the Illa de Arousa: lunch on board or a snack stop, a nap in the sun, paddleboarding or snorkelling if you fancy it.
5. Punta Cabalo and a gentle return: we pass the lighthouse and cruise back along the coast as the afternoon light falls over the ría.

At no point in that day do you need to know anything about boats. Just bring a swimsuit, sunscreen and good spirits.

Quick questions about licence-free rental

• Do I need to book in advance? In summer, yes: weekends go fast. Weekdays we usually have more availability.
• Can children come? Of course. We carry lifejackets in their sizes and adapt the route. It's one of the best family plans in the Rías Baixas.
• What if the weather turns bad? We assess it together the day before. If we can't go out safely, we move the date at no cost. We'd rather lose an outing than give you a bad day at sea.
• Can I bring food and drinks? Absolutely. And if you prefer, we'll tell you where to order empanada or seafood in Vilanova to pick up before boarding.
